The Community Sharps Program

SHARPS Drop off Program Expanded at The Kingston Hospital

KINGSTON – Starting Wednesday, January 3, 2007, county residents can drop off their sharps, needles, syringes and lancets at The Kingston Hospital every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Sharps will be accepted at the hospital’s volunteer information desk on the main floor off the ED entranceway but all sharps must be secured in a puncture-resistant plastic container with a screw top lid. The words Contains Sharps must be clearly marked in indelible ink on the side of the container.

The Kingston Hospital has served as a monthly sharps drop-off location for more than 10 years to help community residents, with such medical conditions as diabetes and allergies, dispose of their medical implements safely.   The hospital decided to expand its program this year because the proper disposal of these sharps has become a major safety issue in the region.

The hospital will provide replacement containers at no charge, thanks to a grant program from the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency.

This program is only for community residents. Sharps from private physician practices, acupuncturists, chiropractors, nursing agencies, or veterinarians will not be accepted. Contact Brian Lett of Stericycle Customer Service at (847) 943-6571 for non-residential sharps pick ups.
