Margaretville Hospital Auxiliary

For more than 40 years, the Margaretville Auxiliary has been supporting the programs and services at Margaretville Hospital and Mountainside Residential Care Center.

Incorporated in January, 1966, the Margaretville Hospital Auxiliary has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years to pay for new ambulances, wheelchairs, state-of-the-art medical equipment, Lifeline Personal Response System units for the homebound and elderly, and other hospital-related projects through innovative fund-raising ideas including the annual Antique Flea Market, Easter and Christmas fairs, fashion shows, raffles, bakes sales and successful quilting projects.

And speaking of quilting, the origins of the Auxiliary are connected to sewing. When Margaretville Hospital first opened in 1931, there was a dedicated group of women who mended and repaired thousands of necessary articles for the hospital. In 1947, they formed the Grey Ladies group to assist the staff at the hospital. A call went out for volunteers and the community responded. Under the guidance of Norma Burgin, Marion Munro and Harriet Smith, a large group of enthusiastic women established guidelines, formed committees and elected officers. Some of these original Grey Ladies are still sewing for the hospital and residential care center today.

In January 1966, the present Auxiliary was created from the firm foundation established by the Grey Ladies. Marion Munro was the first president followed by: Henrietta Farber, Marian Connell, Blanche (Gallo) Guinan, Betty Sanford, Pat Shapiro, Dorothy Miller, Margaret Duggan, Terry Cohen, Blanche Drexler, Gloria Kopp, Pat Millen, Edna Squires, Cathy Hinkley, Eleanor Aulino, Roni Daley and Emilie Davenport.
